The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama, was opened in November 1982 as a comprehensive art museum designed not only for the exhibition of art works but also to promote artistic activities among the general public and provide spaces where members of the public can exhibit their art. The museum's collection contains works by leading modern and contemporary artists and by prominent artists from Saitama and the Japanese and overseas artists who influenced them.

Outline of Activities

Standing exhibition
The standing exhibition is made up of outstanding works in the museum's collection. In order to present a wide variety of works, this exhibition is changed about four times a year.

Special exhibitions
Exhibitions with specially selected themes or featuring outstanding artists are held about five times a year.

Promotional activities
Lecture courses on topics such as art history or contemporary art are held at the museum about three times a year. During the summer vacation, the museum runs an art workshop for parents and children. In addition, one evening every month, we hold a "Friday Talk" on the works in the museum's collection.

Public rental galleries
The museum rents gallery space to the public so that individual artists or groups of artists in Saitama Prefecture can exhibit their work.

Other activities
Publication of "Zocalo" ,the museum's magazine, "Museum Calendar," a guide to the year's events, and "Museum News" , a newsletter providing more detailed information on events and other activities. The museum also produces various information leaflets to help visitors understand the works on display.

Information

Museum hours
10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (entry to galleries until 5:00 p.m.)
* On Fridays, the museum is open from 10:00 to 8:00 p.m. (entry to galleries until 7:30 p.m.)

Closed
Mondays (except national holidays and Saitama Prefectural Citizens' Day), days immediately following national holidays (except when these days fall on Saturdays, Sundays or national holidays), year-end and New Year holiday.

Fees for entrance to exhibitions
Fees are collected for the exhibitions.

Other Information

Information counter
If you have any questions or problems, please ask at the information counter near the entrance on the 1st floor.

Lockers
Lockers are provided next to the information counter. The 100 yen coin used to lock the door is returned when the door is unlocked.

Facilities for the handicapped
Wheelchairs and rest rooms for disabled persons are provided. Please inform the museum staff beforehand if parking space is required. If any other problem arises, inquire at the information counter on the 1st floor.

Photographs
Visitors are requested not to take photographs in the galleries.

Restaurant
The Italian restaurant "Peperone" is located on the 1st floor. The restaurant opening hours are the same as the those of the museum.

Museum shop
The museum shop on the 1st floor sells exhibition catalogs, original goods produced by the museum, art goods, and art books.

* Smoking is prohibited in the galleries - please smoke only in the places where ashtrays are provided. Visitors are requested not to bring food or drink into the museum.

Access

Three-minutes walk from the West Exit of Kita-Urawa Station on the Keihin Tohoku Line. (The museum is situated in Kita-Urawa Park.) From Tokyo, take the Keihin-Tohoku Line for Omiya.
The museum has no parking facilities for private automobiles. Please make inquiries beforehand regarding parking facilities for buses transporting groups to the museum.
